Mca Youth Calls For Reforms To Let Macc Stand On Its Own
To prove the “Reformasi” movement is not just a tagline, MCA Youth has challenged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to reform the MACC.
MCA Youth spokesperson Lee Yee Yuan said the anti-corruption watchdog, currently under the purview of the prime minister, should “stand on its own” without political interference.
To achieve true independence, he said, laws must be amended to park the MACC under Parliament’s jurisdiction.
“This is to ensure that the agency is truly independent and not influenced by any political party or leader.
“MCA is also of the opinion that if the matter (reforms) is implemented, investigation processes - especially cases linked to the ruling parties - may be carried out transparently without interference.
“Perhaps this is the best time for Anwar to prove that the government, under his leadership, will go through the ‘Reformasi’ process that he once chanted during his time in the opposition,” Lee said in a statement.
MCA Youth spokesperson Lee Yee YuanHe also warned the government not to repeat mistakes such as the appointment of former PKR central committee member Latheefa Koya to the MACC chief commissioner’s post.
Latheefa was unilaterally appointed to the role by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2019, which courted controversy as it circumvented the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Public Appointments.
She gave up her PKR membership upon the appointment.
Earlier today, PKR president Anwar stressed that the government did not interfere in the MACC and judiciary, amid allegations that it is using the anti-graft body as a “political tool” against Bersatu. - Mkini
