Matchmaker Beating Cop Transferred Pending Probe Selangor Police Chief
The police officer who allegedly beat a woman for not finding him a match on a matrimony website has been transferred to the administration division, according to Selangor police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed.
He said the 35-year-old suspect was a corporal detective in Selangor while Kuala Lumpur police are investigating the case.
"I would like to set the record straight, the said individual was not a senior officer but detective corporal in Selangor," he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro today.
"Apart from looking into criminal conduct, a disciplinary investigation will be carried out on the personnel," he told a press conference in Sepang.
"We acted immediately by transferring him from his duties as a detective to administrative works while further investigations were conducted by the Kuala Lumpur police," said Arjunaidi.
The cop allegedly assaulted the matchmaker in a lift near Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Kuala Lumpur on Nov 16.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had paid the victim RM2,500 to find him a suitable match on a matrimony website.
After six months of waiting, the suspect purportedly lost his temper and assaulted the 34-year-old woman in an elevator at the latter's office in Cheras on Nov 16.
The assault was captured by a closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) in the lift and was later circulated on social media.
The victim suffered head injuries as a result of the attack and was treated at a hospital.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and the police officer's statement would be recorded to facilitate investigations.
If convicted, the suspect faces a prison term up to one year, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both. - Mkini
