Mat Sabu Najib In Jail Not Cause For Celebration But Lesson
Amid the deluge of media statements and social media postings celebrating the Federal Court’s decision to uphold Najib Abdul Razak’s conviction, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu adopted a more contemplative approach.
Breaking his silence on the matter, he cautioned against being arrogant or celebrating another’s misfortune.
On the contrary, the veteran politician, who is better known as Mat Sabu, said the episode should serve as a lesson.
“We should use it as a guide and lesson so that those of us who are still outside (of prison) and free do not repeat the mistake,” he said on Facebook.
In a unanimous decision yesterday, the five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, dismissed the former prime minister’s appeal with regard to the case of RM42 million transferred into his bank account from SRC International.
The apex court also reaffirmed the lower courts' decision to sentence Najib to 12 years in prison. He was later taken to the Kajang prison complex.
The former premier must also settle the RM210 million fine, failing which he would need to spend another five years in prison.
Najib, 69, claimed he was not accorded a fair trial, saying the “might of the judicial machinery is pinned against me in the most unfair manner”.
Meanwhile, the Amanah president urged Malaysians to remain committed to building a better nation and eradicating corruption.
“We shall strive and pray that Malaysia and her people continue to be in peace and that social justice can be upheld in the time to come,” he added. - Mkini
