Man Charged With Murder After House Fire Kills Mother Foster Sister

No plea was recorded from Daniel Qayyum Kamalrolzlan, 23, when the charge was read to him by the court interpreter before magistrate Balqis Roslin as murder charges fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
On the first charge, Daniel Quyyum is alleged to have murdered Hayani Yaakob, 51, at their house in Lorong Nakhoda 5, Taman Teluk Air Tawar about 9.45am on Dec 10.
On the second charge, he is alleged to have murdered a six-year-old girl in the same house at the same time and day.
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of not less than 30 years and up to 40 years.
If the death penalty is not imposed, the accused must be caned not less than 12 times.
Daniel Quyyum merely nodded his head twice to indicate he understood the charges which we read to him.
He tilted his head to his left when listening to the charges.
Yesterday was supposed to be the last day of his week-long remand.
Prosecuting officer Inspector Nor Idayu Yusoff said no bail was offered.
She requested a mention date for the submission of the post-mortem report.
"No bail will be offered," Balqis told the accused.
She then fixed Jan 29, next year for mention.
Earlier, Daniel Quyyum arrived at the Butterworth court here about 8.27am under police escort.
In the Dec 10 incident, Hayani, in and her adopted daughter, known only as Andra, were burnt to death when their rented house in Lorong Nakhoda 5, Taman Rathna, was on fire.
The charred remains of the mother and daughter were found side by side near the main door.
Daniel Quyyum, who works in the oil and gas industry in Pengerang, Johor,
sustained injuries after being crushed under a collapsing section of the roof.
Police later identified him as the suspect in the case.
Meanwhile, when met after proceeding, Kamalrolzlan Muhammad, 57, said he has yet to claim his ex-wife and adopted daughter's remains for burial while awaiting the results of the DNA.
