A POST on X (formerly Twitter) by JalalMisai (@jllmisai) has gotten some netizens excited.
It contains a brief video showing what appears to be a pair of selipar Jepun a.k.a. Japanese slippers being presented as exquisite footwear in a posh shop in Kuwait.
The accompanying video clip states that this footwear carried an astronomical price tag of 4,500 Kuwaiti riyal (RM5,600)!

While the veracity of the clip could not be confirmed, the gargantuan price tag certainly got netizens’ tongues wagging with the post having generated 414,100 views at the time of writing.
One netizen observed how different things are here in Malaysia when similar-designed slippers are used in bathrooms here or as “mosque-wear”.

Many netizens recalled fond childhood memories of using these slippers as playthings.

Many also expressed disbelief at the astronomical price tag with one netizen asking if rubber trees have gone extinct leading to this phenomenon.

This led to some netizens excitedly thinking there is a fortune to be made in the slipper-export business.

Some surmised that the fancy presentation and packaging justified the eye-watering price tag of the sandals which are also known as “flip-flops”.

While a few netizens cheekily remarked that Malaysians are fashion forerunners.

Another hilariously claimed to have solved the mystery of “why so many slippers go missing at mosques”.

Some commented that this phenomenon is the result of people getting blinkered by extreme wealth.

With one urging budding slipper entrepreneurs to take advantage of the situation.

Alas, the poster pricked the bubble by explaining that the slippers in the video were of a different type with soft and flexible soles unlike the local variant which is “rock hard”.

Just for a moment, the dream of getting rich by “flipping” flip-flops (pun fully intended) seemed possible.
