(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed in principle to allow the Islamic development department’s (Jakim) halal logo to be used for halal products exported to Indonesia without requiring a separate standard operating procedure
In a Bernama report, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysia will also recognise Indonesia’s halal certification for products exported to Malaysia.
He said the agreement was endorsed by Indonesia’s religious affairs minister Nasaruddin Umar.
“This is a game changer that we must appreciate due to the commitment shown by industry players,” said Zahid, who chairs the Malaysian Halal Council.
Zahid was speaking to the media after paying a courtesy call on Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta today.
Zahid said he also proposed that a halal industry forum, which is set to be jointly organised by Malaysia and Indonesia, be held at the regional level.
He also called for an Asean halal council to be established, which he said would coordinate the issuance of halal certificates in Asean and make the region a major market.
Zahid said Prabowo and him also stressed on efforts to promote Malaysian higher education in technical, engineering and professional fields in Indonesia, which would encourage more Indonesian students to pursue their studies in Malaysia.
Zahid concluded his three-day official visit to Indonesia today. - FMT
