11.05pm: BN wants to ensure that the Malacca state legislative assembly does not face a dissolution for at least another four years, says its chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Speaking to supporters after BN's landslide victory in the state polls, he states that the new Umno-led government will call for cooperation between the assemblypersons.
On top of this, BN will also table an anti-party hopping law in the next state assembly sitting.
"BN will table an enactment against party hopping.
"BN will also propose cooperation between assemblypersons to ensure that the state assembly remains for another four years after its first sitting," he adds.
Shot in the arm for PM and BN
10.30pm: SPOT ANALYSIS | The shockwaves from BN's overwhelming victory in Malacca will likely reach Putrajaya and embolden the coalition and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob as they prepare for the next general election.
BN has shown that, at least for the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, its Muafakat Nasional pact with PAS is irrelevant.
However, while it may seem like a crushing defeat for PN on paper, it made inroads in several seats while achieving unexpected victories in Bemban and Sungai Udang.
Some of PN's stronger candidates, including its designated chief minister Mas Ermieyati Samsuddin, also put up respectable performances.
This election allowed PN to probe BN's defences for weaknesses and, as in the case of Bemban and Sungai Udang, win.
PKR sec-gen impressed by PN's performance
10.20pm: PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail is impressed by PN's performance in the state election.
He says PN did well despite being a relatively new coalition that is contesting in Peninsular Malaysia for the first time.
"Their performance is very interesting.... their performance is not disappointing and actually quite significantl especially in Malay-majority seats," he tells reporters.
In Tanjung Bidara for example - which was a BN stronghold - PN's candidate Mas Ermieyati Samsudin lost by just 364 votes.
PN also bagged Sungai Udang, another BN stronghold, as well as wrested Bemban from Pakatan Harapan.
Asked if PKR lost Machap Jaya because it did not field incumbent Ginie Lim, Saifuddin says there were multiple factors, and not fielding Lim may have been one of them.
PKR, which fielded 11 candidates, failed to win a single seat.
Biggest losers: PKR, PAS and Gerakan fail to win single seat
10.10pm: The Anwar Ibrahim-led PKR fielded 11 candidates for the state election but failed to win a single seat. Anwar is also the chairperson of Harapan.
PKR came close in Paya Rumput, which saw its central committee member Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin being edged out by BN's Rais Yasin.
In the 2018 general election, PKR won 3 seats.
Meanwhile, PN component parties PAS and Gerakan, both of whom decided to stick with former premier Muhyiddin Yassin's Bersatu instead of BN, were also left empty-handed.
PAS fielded eight candidates while Gerakan five. Prior to the polls, Gerakan president Dominic Lau predicted a clean sweep.
EC declares BN as winner
10.05pm: The Election Commission has declared BN as the winner of the Malacca state election.
"For the overall result, as of 9.42pm, BN has won 15 out of the total 28 seats, and thus has formed the majority," EC chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh tells a press conference in Ayer Keroh.
PAS MP hopes federal govt will remain
9.57pm: Winning and losing is part and parcel of an election, PAS MP Khairuddin Aman Razali tells reporters at the Hatten Hotel.
“We just hope that Insyallah (God willing), whatever it is, our joint government at the federal level will remain. That is our hope,” he adds.
PAS, which is part of the PN coalition, fielded five candidates but failed to win a single seat. PN which contested in all 28 seats won only two.
However, it managed to stage an upset when Bersatu candidate Dr Aleef Yusof, who made his election debut, won the Sungai Udang seat.
Sungai Udang is considered a traditional BN stronghold. The constituency has the largest proportion of early voters in the entire state, making up 42 percent of the total registered voters.
PN wins two seats
9.55pm: PN has won two seats - Bemban and Sungai Udang.
PN's Dr Aleef Yusof, 35, won the former BN stronghold Sungai Udang seat with 43.9 percent of the vote share.
This election is the first for the Bersatu member.
BN's vote share in Sungai Udang had dropped dramatically to 40.4 percent, down from 56.2 percent previously.
Meanwhile, PN's Mohd Yadzil Yaakub won the Bemban constituency, with a low 35 percent of the vote share, edging out BN's Koh Chin Han.
Mohd Yadzil Yaakub
Landslide: BN wins two-thirds majority
9.50pm: BN has secured two-thirds majority control of the Malacca legislative assembly.
This is a major turnaround for the coalition, which previously had only 13 out of the 28 seats.
With a two-thirds majority, BN can amend the state constitution.
BN has pledged to do so in order to create five seats in the Malacca legislative assembly for appointed members.
This, said BN, was to create "political stability" in a legislative assembly with even numbers.
Harapan's Adly Zahari retains seat
9.45pm: Malacca Pakatan Harapan chief Adly Zahari has officially retained his Bukit Katil seat with a 1,057-vote majority.
He is expected to be the sole Amanah representative in the state assembly, bringing the party's seat count down from 2 to 1.
The former chief minister's victory is a sign of his popularity in an election that has seen Harapan ceding seats to BN and PN in Malay-majority constituencies.
DAP, Bersatu state chiefs defeated
9.40pm: Malacca Bersatu chief Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen was trounced in the Telok Mas seat.
According to the unofficial count, he secured only 28 percent of the vote share.
Harapan won the seat in 2018 with a 44.6 percent vote share. At the time, Rafiq and Bersatu were part of the Harapan coalition.
In 2018, Rafiq won the Paya Rumput seat for Harapan but opted for Telok Mas this time round.
Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen
Over at Bemban, Malacca DAP chief Tey Kok Kiew failed to retain the seat for Harapan.
Tey came in third place. Harapan's vote share for Bemban dropped dramatically to 26.4 percent, down from 45.4 in 2018.

Harapan concedes defeat, blames poor turnout
9.25pm: Harapan has conceded defeat and congratulated BN on winning the state election.
Malacca Harapan chief Adly Zahari says the outcome was due to the low voter turnout.
"From the onset, we told everyone that Harapan's chances hinged on the turnout being above 70 percent," he tells reporters at the coalition's operations centre at LaCrista Hotel.
Harapan leaders said they would do a post-mortem to determine the areas which can be improved.
BN triumphant, Harapan's seats halved, PN crushed
8.55pm: Malaysiakini is calling the Malacca state election for BN, which appears to be on track to form the next government with a convincing majority in the legislative assembly.
Based on the unofficial count, Harapan is projected to win about half of the 15 seats it won during the 2018 general election.
As for PN, which comprises Bersatu, PAS and Gerakan, the coalition is poised to win a single seat from the 28 it contested.
Although the fledgling PN coalition, formed in the aftermath of a political coup at the federal level last year, came close to winning several seats, the Malacca polls has been nothing short of a disaster.
The coalition headed by former premier Muhyiddin Yassin looks set to lose its deposit in two seats.
PN may break the duck by conquering BN's army stronghold
8.50pm: Things are not looking good for PN and the coalition could lose its deposit in some seats.
However, its greenhorn candidate, 35-year-old doctor, Aleef Yusof, still has a chance of taking Sungai Udang from BN.
This is a significant seat because it was once held by former chief minister Idris Haron, who has now shifted allegiance to Harapan.
Moreover, a large proportion of voters are military personnel. The constituency is considered a BN stronghold.
Based on the unofficial count, PN has a 47 percent vote share while BN trails closely with 40 percent.

Invitation to CM swearing-in sent even before results announced
9.05pm: The new chief minister will be sworn in at the governor's office at 1pm tomorrow.
An invitation for the ceremony has been sent out by the chief minister's office even before the Election Commission has declared the winner.
MIC beats DAP in Gadek
8.50pm: MIC looks set to win in Gadek, which will be its first and only seat in Malacca.
MIC's P Shanmugam appears to have defeated DAP incumbent G Saminathan with a 559-vote majority while Bersatu's Mohd Amir Fitri Muharam is in third place.
P Shanmugam
BN reclaims Durian Tunggal from Amanah
8.45pm: BN has managed to win the Durian Tunggal seat which it lost to Harapan in the 2018 general election.
Based on the unofficial count, it is going to be a close call for BN's Zahari Abdul Khalil, who currently sits on a 39 percent vote share.
Incumbent Mohd Sofi Abdul Wahab from Amanah currently has a 33 percent vote share, down from 47 percent he received in 2018.
MCA candidate wrests back Machap Jaya
8.35pm: BN has reclaimed Machap Jaya after losing the seat for the first time in the 2018 general election.
According to the unofficial count, MCA's Ngwe Hee Sem has a commanding lead against Harapan's Law Bing Haw and PN's Tai Siong Jiul.
However, Ngwe looks set to win with less than 50 percent of the votes.
In a controversial move, Law from PKR had replaced the party's former incumbent Ginie Lim.
Ngwe Hee Sem
Unofficial: Ex-CM Idris Haron routed in Asahan
8.30pm: Former Malacca chief minister Idris Haron - whose defection triggered the state election - looks set to be defeated in Asahan, according to unofficial results.
He has so far bagged only 1,344 votes and is trailing BN's Fairul Nizam Roslan by 3,472 votes.
PN's B Dhanesh is in second place with 1,846 votes. It is not likely that Idris or Dhanesh will close the gap.
Idris Haron
Unofficial: First-timer scores big win for BN in Kuala Linggi
8.20pm: BN is set to register a convincing victory in the Kuala Linggi seat.
The coalition's candidate Rosli Abdullah, who is making his debut, has a 51 percent vote share. Based on the number of votes counted so far, his vote share is insurmountable.
His opponents from PN and Harapan have nearly identical vote shares at around 24 percent each.
BN's vote share in Kuala Linggi is on track to be similar to what was seen during the 2018 general election.
BN claims victory over PN's CM candidate
8.10pm: According to the scoreboard at BN's operations centre in Ayer Keroh, the coalition has managed to retain the Tanjung Bidara seat.
The two main contestants for the seat are Malacca BN chief Ab Rauf Yusoh and PN's chief minister candidate Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.
Based on the unofficial results, Rauf appears to have edged Mas Ermieyati with a small majority. Harapan's Zainal Hassan looks set to lose his deposit.
As of now, BN and Harapan have picked up three seats each. Harapan retains DAP's seats of Ayer Keroh, Bandar Hilir and Kota Laksamana. Meanwhile, BN keeps Umno's traditional strongholds of Taboh Naning, Serkam and Merlimau.
Ab Rauf Yusoh
Unofficial: BN's winning streak continues – Merlimau in the bag
8pm: Akmal Salah, who is contesting in his first election, has retained Merlimau for BN after tallying an impressive 57.9 percent of the votes, based on the count so far.
Harapan's Azrin Abdul Baziz is poised to come in second followed by PN's Abd Alim Shapie.
BN's vote share is considerably better than the 45.4 percent seen in the 2018 general election.
Unofficial: BN keeps Taboh Naning stronghold
7.55pm: BN is projected to retain the Umno stronghold of Taboh Naning.
At the time of writing, BN's Zulkiflee Bin Mohd Zin has won 2,765 votes while PN and Harapan are behind with 1,185 and 773 votes respectively.
There are an estimated 1,300 votes left to be counted but BN is already ahead with 1,580 votes.
Zulkiflee Bin Mohd Zin
Unofficial: BN's debutante retains Rim
7.50pm: BN has retained Rim. Based on the votes tallied so far, BN's Khaidhirah Abu Zahar - who is making her electoral debut - has an unassailable lead.
However, she is on track to win with less than 50 percent of the votes cast. There are only about 880 votes left to be counted.
Her PN opponent Azalina Abdurrahman is trailing at a distant second followed by Harapan's Prasanth Kumar Brakasam.
Khaidhirah Abu Zahar
Unofficial: Harapan wins Bandar Hilir
7.30pm: Harapan's Leng Chau Yen is set to win Bandar Hilir, its second seat of the election.
At the time of writing, she has garnered 7,017 votes compared to the 1,085 votes for BN's Lee Kah Sean and 518 votes for PN's Clarice Chan Ming Wang.
Malaysiakini estimates that there are only around 5,000 votes left, which is not enough to erase Harapan's lead of 5,392 votes.

Vote split may bolster ex-CM Adly's chances
7.25pm: The vote is split in Bukit Katil where Amanah's Adly Zahari is hoping to retain his seat.
He has 42 percent of the votes in his favour, well ahead of his BN opponent Hasnoor Hussein who is trailing with 34.7 percent of the votes and PN's Muhammad Al Afiz Yahya with 21.87 percent of the votes.
If PN and BN remain on the same trajectory, then the two will have captured more than 50 percent of the votes and possibly allow Adly - a former chief minister for Pakatan Harapan - to win.
Adly Zahari
Unofficial: Harapan bags first seat – Kota Laksamana
7.20pm: Harapan is set to win the Kota Laksamana seat, which is a traditional DAP stronghold.
At the time of writing, Harapan has established an unassailable lead with 10,563 votes while BN is in a distant second with 1,765 votes and PN with 988 votes.
Harapan's candidate for Kota Laksamana is DAP's Low Chee Leong.
With a lead of 8,698 votes, Malaysiakini projects that there are not enough ballots left for either BN or PN to close the gap.
Malaysiakini estimates that there are less than 6,700 votes left if the turnout is just under 70 percent.
Low Chee Leong
PN surges ahead in BN's army fortress of Sungai Udang
7.25pm: PN has established a strong lead in Sungai Udang, where the Terendak and Sungai Udang military camps are located.
The seat is a traditional Umno-BN stronghold.
Based on unofficial results, PN has so far gathered 4,589 votes to BN's 3,508. Harapan only has 674 votes.
In the 2018 general election, BN won the seat with 56.22 percent of the votes.
The constituency has the largest proportion of early voters in the entire state, making up 42 percent of the total registered voters.
Unofficial: BN, Harapan neck and neck in Kelebang
7.10pm: A tight race is taking place between BN and Harapan in Kelebang.
BN has a slender lead with 2,459 votes while Harapan has 2,246 votes. PN is in third place with 2,030 votes.
PKR clinched the Kelebang seat in the 2018 general election with a narrow 789-vote majority.
The incumbent Gue Teck is defending the seat against BN's Lim Ban Hong, who is the state MCA chief, and PN's Bakri Jamaluddin.
BN displays 'unofficial' results on trucks
6.55pm: BN is using mobile screens fitted on trucks to show the unofficial results for their supporters near the coalition's headquarters in Ayer Keroh.
Some 400 people are in the vicinity with dozens glued to the screens displaying the votes.
"Unofficial" results are usually sourced from the party's election scrutineers after they sign the results form (Borang 14).
Unofficial: Harapan pulls ahead in traditional seats
6.50pm: Harapan pulls ahead in DAP's strongholds of Bandar Hilir and Kota Laksamana.

In Kota Laksamana, Harapan is ahead with 2,262 votes while BN received 474 votes and PN, 244.
Harapan is also leading in Ayer Keroh with 1,968 votes compared to BN's 864 votes and PN's 555 .
All three seats were won by DAP in the 2018 general election.
Unofficial: PN within firing distance of BN in army constituency
6.40pm: Sungai Udang, which houses the Terendak and Sungai Udang military camps, is a litmus test with regard to army votes.
The constituency has the largest proportion of early voters in the entire state, making up 42 percent of the total registered voters.
Early voters mostly comprise army and police voters and their spouses, who cast their ballots on Nov 16.
PN is proving to be a force to be reckoned with amongst these voters despite being relatively new.
Based on unofficial preliminary votes in Sungai Udang, BN is leading with 1,812 votes while PN is close behind with 1,502 votes. Harapan has 151 votes while the independent candidate, 82.
In the past, army and police votes were considered as a fixed deposit for BN.
Covid-19 positive voter detected in Alor Gajah
6.30pm: The Malacca Health Department shut down parts of the SK Jeram polling centre in Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah (Tanjung Bidara constituency), earlier after a voter tested positive for Covid-19.
According to state health director Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman, the voter's Covid-19 test results had come out after the person voted.
There was no mention when the voter took the Covid-19 test.
After being alerted, the state health department ordered the Election Commission to temporarily shut high-risk areas in the polling centre to facilitate disinfection.
Unofficial: PN rivals BN in early votes
6.10pm: PN is showing a strong performance in the early count, garnering votes than rival BN's, according to unofficial results.
Early results comprising mainly of police and army voters who cast their ballot on Nov 16 show that BN remains dominant but PN is nipping at its heels.
In Ayer Keroh, BN garnered 333 votes whereas PN, 270. Harapan, in line with previous trends, performed poorly for this cohort, only receiving 36 votes.
Similar trends were seen in Bandar Hilir where PN gained a respectable 181 votes to BN's 271. Harapan received 23.
In Bemban, PN outperformed BN in the preliminary early votes data, winning 136 votes to BN's 71. Harapan received four.
However, the results will change substantially when the votes from the general population, who cast their ballots today, start coming in.
Party leaders gather at command centres
5.50pm: Leaders of the three major coalitions will be gathering at their respective election command centres.
BN is operating out of Taman Botanikal in Ayer Keroh while Harapan is functioning from the LaCrista Hotel in Malacca town.
Meanwhile, PN leaders are gathering in Bandar Hilir, Malacca.
By convention, the polling agent of the respective parties will be at the various polling district centres on the ground where the votes are counted.
Once the counting at a polling district is complete, the polling agent will report to their party headquarters.
The party headquarters will then tally the results of all the polling districts within a state constituency.
This is how unofficial results are arrived at. The Election Commission is only expected to announce the official results at around 10pm.
Polling ends, counting begins to determine Malacca's new govt
5.30pm: Polling for the 28 seats in the Malacca state election ended at 5.30pm. A minimum of 15 seats is needed for a simple majority.
This is the second polls to be held amid the Covid 19 pandemic. Last year, the Sabah polls led to a surge in Covid-19 cases.
The Malacca polls was triggered by a group of rebel Umno and Bersatu leaders who tried to topple their own government amid an internal tussle.
However, Umno's incumbent chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali blocked their attempt to form a new government with the opposition by seeking a dissolution of the state assembly on Oct 4, paving the way for the fresh polls.
This is the second round of defections after the Patakan Harapan government elected in 2018 collapsed.
Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim conceded that the low voter turnout for the Malacca polls could pose a problem for the coalition.
Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin also appeared rattled by the poor turnout, urging voters to cast their ballots in a video earlier.
Whereas BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the low turnout was expected but believes the voters will favour BN.
He also did not discount the possibility of working with other coalitions to form a government.
"We are open to all (possibilities). What's important is stability for politics in Malacca. Details of this arrangement will be shared with the media eventually," he adds.
The turnout, based on the last update at 4pm, was 61 percent. The Election Commission will only announce the final figure later but estimates show it will be just under 70 percent.
