Reddit CEO Steve Huffman on Scrollers and Seekers
Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, has a simple way of categorizing users: Scrollers and Seekers.
Scrollers are those who dive into Reddit to engage with communities about their interests, whether it’s baking sourdough or discussing pop culture in r/popculturechat. On the other hand, Seekers are the ones who hop on Google, type in their question, and add “Reddit” at the end to find genuine advice from real people.
To cater to Seekers, Reddit launched Reddit Answers, an AI-driven chatbot that pulls precise answers and summaries from existing Reddit discussions. Early feedback shows that it’s off to a solid start.
“We’ve never really built a product specifically for Seekers until now,” Huffman mentioned during a recent earnings call. “These users aren’t just in search of community; they want answers, and we can recognize that need to provide better solutions.”
The Answers feature has already attracted 1 million weekly active users since it went into beta in December. Recently, Reddit expanded this feature beyond the U.S. to countries like Australia, the U.K., Canada, and India.
Currently, in its beta stage, Answers has its own spot on the app’s navigation bar. By 2025, Reddit plans to integrate it more closely with the platform. One suggested update is putting Answers directly in the main search box, letting users ask full questions instead of just typing in a few keywords.
Huffman also shared ideas on helping new users discover Reddit. “Imagine you’re a fresh user, and Answers guides you through what Reddit has to offer, showing you that we likely have what you’re searching for.”
Additionally, another way to harness Answers might be through external searches, making it easier for users to find quick, concise responses pulled from Reddit.
This approach could help shield Reddit from the unpredictability of Google Search. Last year, an algorithm change at Google led to fluctuations in Reddit’s user growth, worrying investors despite better-than-expected earnings.
“We want people finding Reddit content through Google,” Huffman said. “While being open enhances our visibility, it can also create ups and downs. We anticipate some bumps in the road, especially as Google’s search ecosystem is evolving.”
Despite these challenges, Reddit’s stock jumped after-hours as the company reported impressive earnings, including a revenue of $392.4 million—a 61% increase year-over-year—and 108.1 million daily active users, up 31% from last year.
Looking ahead, Reddit expects its second-quarter revenue to fall between $410 million and $430 million, with adjusted EBITDA between $110 million and $130 million.
In short, Reddit is evolving to meet the different needs of its users, creating more focused experiences for both Scrollers and Seekers alike.
