Mahkota Seat Tussle Amanah Should Help Us Says Umno Sec Gen
It is better for Amanah to help a BN candidate in the Mahkota by-election rather than claim the seat from Umno, said Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.
He said this was because Amanah failed to defend the Johor state constituency for Pakatan Harapan in the 2022 state election.
“We already have an understanding that whoever wins a seat, the party will re-contest the area, that’s clear.
“Amanah contested (in Mahkota) in the last state election, but Umno got 16,000 votes and Amanah 11,000, so that’s the fact.
“It would be good if Amanah combined with BN, 11,000 plus 16,000. There are thousands of votes to win. I have a goal and confidence to win,” Ahmad said when met in Bertam Lama, Kelantan, today.
Earlier today, just several days after the passing of the Mahkota assemblyperson, the late Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, Kluang Amanah chief Zuhan Mohd Zain announced his division’s bid to contest the Mahkota seat.
Kluang Amanah chief Zuhan Mohd ZainZuhan’s announcement at a press conference this morning prompted a stern rebuke by Johor Umno Youth chief Noor Azleen Ambros who urged Amanah to not be greedy and show respect for Sharifah’s mourning family.
Responding to Azleen, Amanah Youth exco member Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda defended Kluang Amanah’s bid for the seat, stating that his party will keep up the pressure if Johor Umno continues to “leave out” Harapan from the state’s administration.
“Otherwise, Amanah Youth will not hesitate to continue pushing for the party to contest in Mahkota, even if it means facing a three-cornered fight,” said Fadhli, the son of Johor Amanah chief, Aminolhuda Hassan.
Seat tussle in Selangor
Amanah Youth’s remarks on Mahkota came a day after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his party will consider a request from Kota Raja Umno to contest at least one state seat under the Kota Raja parliamentary constituency held by Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister, said the proposal expressed by Kota Raja Umno division chief Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz was in line with the current political reality based on understanding between parties in the federal government.
Kota Raja Umno division chief Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz“However, we are determined with the understanding mentioned, we hope in Kota Raja our friends will see that at least one out of (three) seats can be given (to Umno),” said Zahid at the launch of the Kota Raja Umno division meeting in Klang.
Commenting further, Ahmad reiterated that BN will contest the Mahkota state seat, adding, “although it is not wrong for Amanah to try and stake their claim”.
In the 2022 Johor state election, Amanah’s Muhammad Taqiuddin Cheman failed to defend the seat for Harapan, in a four-cornered contest against Sharifah, Perikatan Nasional, and Warisan.
Mahkota is one of two state seats under the Kluang parliamentary constituency, the other being Mengkibol, both held by Harapan through DAP. - Mkini
