Macc Taken To Task Over Panel To Probe Mitra Documents
Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto says the investigation into Mitra should be carried out in a ‘fair and transparent’ manner.KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition MP has questioned the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on the composition of the task force to investigate the authenticity of documents from the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra), which is under investigation over the alleged misuse of its funds.
Kasthuri Patto (PH-Batu Kawan) asked how the unity and national integration department under the national unity ministry could be included in the task force when the ministry itself was under investigation.
“How could MACC form a task force with a government agency under a ministry that is being investigated for mismanagement of public funds?” she asked during the debate on the Supply Bill 2022 at the committee stage in the Dewan Rakyat today.
“Isn’t there any other way to conduct such an investigation? Does MACC lack the expertise to conduct intelligence and internal investigations that you have to establish a task force with a department which is linked to Mitra?”
She said the investigation into Mitra should be carried out in a “fair and transparent” manner.
On Oct 26, MACC announced it had arrested 16 company directors on suspicion of being involved in the misappropriation of Mitra funds meant for the socio-economic development of the Indian community.
Today, it announced that the investigation into 10 companies that received grants from Mitra was nearing completion and the results would be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor.
The investigation into the remaining companies is ongoing. - FMT
