Macc Says Officer Shouted At Psm Members Due To Legal Reasons
The MACC justified the actions of an officer allegedly shouting at several Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) in a viral video as purportedly due to legal reasons.
In a statement, it said that the MACC Security Division only allows for three representatives to enter the compound and meet officers on duty to lodge complaints, a condition which is protected by the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959.
Instead, MACC said, 25 members turned up, seven of which had entered the compound.
“Video recordings and cameras are also not allowed in protected areas without the permission of MACC’s higher management.
“However, it was found that about seven of the 25 individuals in the group had entered the MACC compound in pairs, right up to the main entrance of the building.
“These individuals also did not comply with the Act as they recorded a video while in the compound and the MACC building,” it said.
Protected area
Under Section 4(1) of the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959, a protected area is considered an area considered to be “necessary or expedient that special measures should be taken to control the movements and conduct of persons.”
Section 4(2) reads: Any person who is in any protected area shall comply with such directions for regulating his movement and conduct as may be given by an authorised officer, and an authorised officer may search any person entering, or seeking to enter, or being in, a protected area, and may detain any such person for the purpose of searching him.
Earlier today, several PSM members and Perak farmers visited the MACC Headquarters in Putrajaya to lodge a complaint over the suspected misappropriation of government land affairs in Perak.
Among those present were PSM chairperson Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj, secretary-general Sivarajan Arumugam, and Kanthan farmers representative Tan Tean Chee.
PSM later posted a video on their Twitter account of a MACC officer and Sivarajan in heated talks, alleging that the officer had “shouted” and “chased” the group away.
