Kamarul Zaman Yusoff of Universiti Utara Malaysia says statements by Teresa Kok imply that he is not fit to be a lecturer.KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff has filed a suit against former primary industries minister Teresa Kok alleging that she made defamatory statements against him three years ago
Kamarul contended that a statement on Kok’s Facebook page and a subsequent press release had tarnished his reputation as an academician and a fellow at the Institute of Islamic Research (Iksim)
The suit is understood to have stemmed from a police report Kamarul had made against former deputy minister Hannah Yeoh over her autobiography “Becoming Hannah”
It is understood that separate suits have been filed against other DAP leaders, including Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen, Ipoh Timur MP Wong Kah Woh, former senator Ariffin Omar and Penang deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy
Amanah leaders including Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad and Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin and the party’s news portal are also believed to have been sued by Kamarul
Kamarul claimed he was “rebuked, accused, humiliated and badmouthed”, especially by the DAP leadership, after the police report he made
He said Kok’s statements were untrue and made with malice, and implied that he was a threat to the public and not fit to be a lecturer
Kamarul sought RM8 million in damages from Kok, who is Seputeh MP, as well as an injunction to stop her from repeating the statements
He said his lawyers had sent Kok a letter of demand on June 23, seeking an apology, but her legal team responded by denying his claims
Kamarul also contended that Kok posted another defamatory statement about him on her Facebook page this year, in which she is alleged to have said the lecturer “is merely seeking cheap publicity”. - FMT
