Langkawi Tourism Players Seek Sops Before Reopening
With less than two weeks to the reopening of the travel and tourism sector, tourism industry players in Langkawi have urged the National Security Council (NSC) to make public its standard operating procedures (SOPs) that will regulate their operations.
Online portal The Vibes quoted Tourism Langkawi chairperson Ahmad Pishol Isahak as saying that there should be SOPs to govern all the players and the various services they provide, ranging from transportation, accommodation to tourist attractions, recreational activities and food outlets.
"The most important aspect in the reopening of tourism are the SOPs because the safety of tourists and travel trade employees is of paramount importance in light of the threat posed by Covid-19.
"I think to avoid major outbreaks, RTK-Ag tests must also be made available at all points of entry, including the international airport at Padang Matsirat. That way, tourists can get immediately tested upon arrival," Pishol was quoted as saying.
Further, Pishol said the SOPs must also apply to online-related services, including food deliveries, as an extra measure for all island residents and tourists.
In terms of transportation, Pishol said the NSC should come up with clear SOPs for ferry services to limit passenger loads and observe proper social distancing.
"This will send a clear message to the travel trade community that the authorities are serious about upholding the SOPs, but the authorities must also provide incentives to lure visitors," said Pishol.
He added that preparations must also be made for quarantine centres to house any visitors who tested Covid-19 positive upon arrival on the island.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob previously announced that Langkawi had been chosen as the first destination for a gradual reopening of the tourism sector beginning Sept 16.
The Vibes also quoted Langkawi district health officer Dr Mansor Ismail as saying that said up to 86 percent of islanders registered under MySejahtera have been fully vaccinated.
As of yesterday, Langwi recorded 1,003 active Covid-19 cases with 79 new infections. - Mkini
