Kulasegaran Where S The Promised Socso Protection For Housewives
The government has been urged to speed up the introduction of Social Security Organisation (Socso) coverage for housewives in order to provide protection and benefits for them.
Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran (above) said Human Resources Minister M Saravanan had said in 2021 that 3 million housewives would soon enjoy protection under Socso’s Housewife Social Safety Scheme, which was an initiative mooted during Pakatan Harapan’s administration.
“Yet, until today, there is nothing that has been done.
“I call upon the prime minister to speed up the introduction of coverage of Socso to all mothers in this country.
“During the Harapan administration, the draft legislation was completed and would have covered millions of housewives.
“I can safely say that if Harapan was still in government, this protection and benefit would have reached all housewives and mothers,” Kulasegaran said in a statement today.
While the government was supposed to deliver on this initiative as promised, Kulasegaran noted that they have stayed silent on this Mother’s Day today.
It is important for the government to provide protections for housewives and mothers, he said because “mothers are the greatest gift to humanity”.
Recalling his own late mother, Kulasegaran, who was the former human resources minister, said he will never forget the sacrifices she made for him and his siblings.
He said his mother was a rubber tapper, who continued to work and look after her other children while pregnant with him.
“I will never know the hardship she had to endure for her family, she sacrificed so much for her children’s future.
“Our nation will be better off celebrating and protecting all mothers. Give them the security you should have given them years ago,” he said. - Mkini
