Ku Li Anti Icerd Rally Would Have Been More Meaningful With A Muhibbah Crowd
IPOH: Saturday's anti-Icerd (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial) rally was good, as it united the Malays and Muslims, says Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah
Tengku Razaleigh, however, said it would have been better if the rally was joined by other Malaysians from different races and beliefs. "Malaysia is a diverse country. It is more meaningful if we are united together as Malaysians. "Whether we like it or not, we have to live in tolerance together,” he told reporters when met at the wedding reception of Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud and Zairil Khir Johari here on Sunday (Dec 9)
"Not everything is about us. We need to learn how to share," he said
Tengku Razaleigh said he does not believe that Icerd contradicts the Constitution and that it can be implemented in Malaysia any time soon. "Even the living standards among other races are different. "I think the reason some are against Icerd is because they are not ready to compete against others
"Its implementation can only be done if the government provides a clearer definition of the convention,” he added
The anti-Icerd rally was held to celebrate the government’s decision not to ratify the United Nations convention
Opposition leaders present at the rally included former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang
The government had decided not to ratify Icerd amid rising protests by opponents who claimed that the United Nations human rights agreement would jeopardise the special rights of Malays and bumiputras in the country.- Star
