Knives Out For Terengganu Umno Chief After Bn Polls Debacle
There are calls for Terengganu Umno chief Ahmad Said to step down because BN was trounced during the state legislative assembly elections on Saturday.
Deputy Kemaman Umno division chief Wan Ahmad Nizam Wan Abdul Hamid said Ahmad must take responsibility after the BN-Pakatan Harapan pact failed to win a single seat.
"It is time for him to step down and give new faces a chance so that there can be new ideas to strengthen the party.
"Terengganu BN needs reform, rebranding and re-engineering because the state chapters of BN and Umno are now weak," he said, according to Utusan Malaysia.
Wan Ahmad Nizam believed that Ahmad (above) had overstayed his welcome.
"Ahmad has been the Kemaman division chief since 2000. We have had five youth division chiefs since then, but the division chief itself is the same person," he said.
Wan Ahmad Nizam Wan Abdul HamidAhmad, 66, is the four-time assemblyperson for Kijal. He failed to defend his seat during the election on Saturday and was beaten in a straight fight by Terengganu Bersatu chief Razali Idris.
In 2008, Ahmad was appointed menteri besar, without the party leadership's blessing. Between 2013 and 2018, Ahmad had a tumultuous relationship with the Umno national leadership. However, he was reappointed Terengganu Umno chief in 2019.
Utusan Malaysia also quoted Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) lecturer Ismail Sualman suggesting that Umno's internal problems and penchant for using "recycled" candidates was to blame.
Ismail Sualman"Was Umno's poor performance in Terengganu due to the party's decision to use 'recycled' candidates during each election?
"Or, was it because of internal sabotage?" he asked.
Meanwhile, Wan Ahmad Nizam said it was unfortunate that there were no opposition assemblypersons to play check and balance.
"Now is the time for PAS to implement hudud law as what it had championed before.
"Without any opposition, it is bad for the state's development because they can do whatever they want without any check and balance.
"In the end, it is the people who will suffer," he said. - Mkini
