Khalid Shah Alam Might Reject Azmin What More Afif
Shah Alam constituents might reject Azmin Ali if he contests there and would probably do the same with Seberang Jaya assemblyperson Dr Afif Bahardin, said Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad.
The Amanah Communications director who has defended the parliamentary seat for three terms said this is because Afif has not contributed or given any ideas to improve the area.
"I haven't seen any thoughtful proposals put forward for Shah Alam so far... I haven't even heard his name around here," he said when contacted by Malaysiakini.
This comes after Afif expressed interest to be fielded in Shah Alam or Permatang Pauh as a parliamentary candidate in the next general election.
The 37-year-old had said he was born and bred in Shah Alam, Selangor and has been politically active there despite having represented the Seberang Jaya constituency in Penang for two terms.
Afif said Khalid does not have new ideas and should make way for someone new.
Seberang Jaya assemblyperson Dr Afif BahardinIn response, Khalid said he would welcome the Perikatan Nasional leader if he had any new ideas that are not destructive and don’t involve looting state government money.
“Not all new ideas are necessarily good. (For example) Najib (Abdul Razak) brought many new ideas like 1MDB and SRC (International)," he quipped.
"I think if Azmin is contesting in Shah Alam, the people there will reject him, and also his follower Afif if Afif really is in Azmin’s camp. He hasn't even shown any leadership.”
‘Don’t shoot yourself in the foot’
Khalid added that if Afif really wanted to bring new ideas to the table, he has to be sure not to shoot himself in the foot.
However, he said that ultimately, the decision lies within Shah Alam residents and whether Afif is determined to fulfil his desires.
"I’m not saying that I am better (than Afif), but he himself has not highlighted anything he has done.
"He should come down to the field as the election is near. Perhaps he can add schools, as there are no schools in Denai Alam or Setia Alam. Many new housing areas do not have schools," he said.
When asked if he would defend the Shah Alam parliamentary seat again in GE15 if he’s given the chance, Khalid seemed to indicate that he was ready to pave the way for new faces.
“I’ll have to see first, but I have been in Shah Alam for three terms. What we want is for Shah Alam to uphold good, positive political values, without racism and corruption and with a transparent administration.
“If I can contribute towards that, then we’ll see. But at the same time, I see that there are many young people and if they get nominated (as a candidate), I will support them," he said. - Mkini
