Kg Sg Baru Not Malay Reserve Land Resident Leader

An NGO representing Kampung Sungai Baru residents has denied claims that the area is Malay reserve land.
Kampung Sungai Baru Property Owners Welfare chairperson Sanita Yunus said the village is also not a Malay agricultural settlement, a specially designated and gazetted area in Kuala Lumpur which offers certain land tenure protection for Malays.
“We would like to emphasise that Kampung Sungai Baru is a land inherited from previous generations, and efforts to develop this area are being driven by the residents themselves, with the cooperation of a developer who was selected transparently.
“Our land is not Malay reserve land and this is proven through a sale and purchase agreement with the Selangor State Development Corporation since 1971 with a lease for a period of 99 years,” she told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
ADSThe press conference was attended by more than 50 residents who agreed with the redevelopment project.
Some residents resist eviction
The village has been the focus of discussions on land rights recently after a group of its residents protested against the planned redevelopment.
Tensions escalated during the eviction operation on Sept 12, which saw Dang Wangi district police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman sustain injuries to his head.

Commenting further, Sanita revealed that there are also non-Malay homeowners in the area.
“But they are unable to attend today because they are abroad. So it is not appropriate to make racist statements,” she said.
She also denied claims that the project developer is from Singapore.
“On the contrary, the owner of the company is from Klang, Selangor. So it is not true at all when it is said that the developer is Singaporean. You can check with the Companies Commission of Malaysia,” she said. - Mkini
