Kedah Mb Playing Politics To Fish For Federal Funds Claims Penang Dcm
Penang Second Deputy Chief Minister P Ramasamy has insinuated that Kedah's demand for the island state to pay for raw water from Sungai Muda is a political ploy to get federal funds.
In a statement, Ramasamy said Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was not informed about water rights between the two states, and why Penang did not need to pay for raw water it takes from its side of Sungai Muda.
"Unless of course, he is playing politics to get funds from the federal government," he said.
Sanusi wants to charge 10 sen for every cubic metre of raw water drawn by Penang from Sungai Muda to help ensure continued water supply.
Penang, however, insists it is within its rights to draw raw water from its side of the river.
Previously, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state was willing to hold discussions with Kedah over the latter's demands.
However, Ramasamy said today that no money would be paid.
"The Penang government has made it very clear that it would not pay a single sen to Kedah for drawing water from its side of Sungai Muda.
"There will be no negotiations or even discussions with the Kedah government if the water rights of Penang are not respected," he added.
Sungai Muda flows from central Kedah to the south, forming a natural border with the Penang mainland.
Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man suggested that Penang pay contributions to Kedah for the latter's "sacrifice" to protect the Ulu Muda forest reserve and water catchment area - the source for Sungai Muda.
However, Sanusi said Kedah wants payment for charges, not contributions. - Mkini
