Junk vehicle complaints double in Ampang Jaya
MPAJ has towed away 1,139 abandoned cars this year. — Courtesy of MPAJ COMPLAINTS about abandoned vehicles in Ampang Jaya, Selan­gor, have nearly doubled in just one year.
Ampang Jaya Municipal Coun­cil (MPAJ) said it had received 1,386 complaints of abandoned vehicles so far this year, compared to 799 in the whole of last year.
The local council is banking on its voluntary disposal programme to speed up disposal.
MPAJ’s one-stop centre for abandoned vehicles encourages owners to cancel ownership at the Road Transport Department (JPJ) before handing their cars over.
“Through this method, the disposal timeline can be shortened and depot congestion reduced,” an MPAJ statement said.

Since late 2022, residents have been able to surrender unwanted vehicles through MPAJ’s voluntary disposal programme.
The local council said the initiative needs greater publicity to raise awareness.
“By deregistering their vehicles at JPJ and handing them over voluntarily, the disposal process can be sped up and help ease overcrowding at depots,” MPAJ said.
However, the municipal council declined to comment on how many vehicles had been voluntarily surrendered under the programme.
Last year, StarMetro reported that 50 vehicles had been surrendered in the two years since the programme was launched.

MPAJ acknowledged that its depots were “almost full” with vehicles still tied up in the legal process.
Currently, 1,139 cars at its depots are awaiting court proceedings for forfeiture orders before disposal.
According to MPAJ, 441 vehicles have received court forfeiture orders and been scrapped or auctioned as of this month.
To promote the voluntary surrender scheme, MPAJ has been using its social media platforms and counters at compound payment centres around Ampang Jaya.
“Owners who wish to surrender their cars can do so once the JPJ deregistration is completed.
