It is understood that all the victims experienced symptoms such as stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhoea, and headache after eating the canteen food during recess, reported Bernama.
State education, higher education, youth, and sports committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said he was informed that the incident started at 10.50am and involved pupils from the school’s morning and evening sessions.
He said the Kinta Utara education office was told that 86 pupils were affected and that one of them has been sent to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment.
“Early reports received stated that the curry noodles, chicken curry, and iced Milo (sold by the canteen) were suspected to have been contaminated.
The Kinta health office has conducted checks and taken food samples from the canteen at 11am today, he said at an event at the Ungku Omar Polytechnic in Ipoh.
Khairudin said the students’ parents had complained through the school’s WhatsApp group about their children’s symptoms.
He said the school subsequently issued a letter to the affected students, advising them to seek further treatment at government and private clinics.
One special needs student had to be hospitalised for monitoring.
Any further decisions will depend on the investigation conducted by the health office, while the school must submit reports according to the established procedures, Khairudin said.
There have been numerous cases of food poisoning outbreaks in the past year, including two involving Mara colleges, as well as primary schools in Selangor and Sabah, and secondary schools in Kelantan and Penang. - FMT
