Indonesian Envoy Bureaucratic Politics Root Cause Of Forced Labour In Malaysia
Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Hermono told a webinar today that bureaucratic politics in Malaysia and Indonesia was the root cause of forced labour and people trafficking.
He said the policy-making process in Malaysia marred by the rivalry between ministries and agencies is the reason for the messy management of migrant workers here.
Hermono, who goes by one name, said government institutions and their respective proxies tried to maximise their monetary interest in the migration industry.
“It’s very clear that their interests are mainly resources – about money. There is a huge amount of money circulating in the management of migrant workers in Malaysia,” he added.
Hermono pointed out that the problem of bureaucratic politics was also present in Indonesia and “that’s why we are trying to fix this problem.”
“I am very happy to witness that Malaysia has realised these issues and the cabinet decision to shift some authority from the Home Ministry to the Human Resources Ministry is indicative of this,” he said.
They will now observe how the shift of responsibilities would be implemented, the ambassador added.
The webinar Hermono participated in was on social policies toward good and sustainable governance on the placement of migrant workers organised by Migrant Care.
He pointed out that Malaysia was given a red mark when it was downgraded to Tier Three in the Trafficking in Persons Report in 2021 and subsequently was subject to a ban of products produced by certain companies which he said was an alarm to be taken very seriously.
