The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah deputy chairman said he began implementing his vision as Kimanis MP from 2004 to 2019, and that the setting up of an oil and gas (O&G) technology university was among the final pieces of the puzzle.
He said throughout the years, he had put in a lot of effort to establish the existing O&G terminal in Kimanis, the parliamentary constituency where Bongawan is located, to provide job opportunities for locals and spur the energy sector.
“I want to bring to perfection to what I started,” he said, adding that his university proposal was not new although it had only led to the setting up of a Petronas training centre in Kimanis, for now.
“I want something like Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Perak here in Bongawan. I believe Petronas has the capability to do it,” he said in an interview with FMT.
The former foreign minister said such a varsity would attract students from China, Indonesia and the Philippines, among others, and the spillover effects would be felt by constituents.
“Many will get to learn and work. All kinds of businesses can be opened.”
Anifah is in a nine-cornered contest in Bongawan, seeking to wrest the seat from Warisan’s Daud Yusof who has represented the constituency for two terms now.
In the running as well is another former Bongawan assemblyman, the current two-term Kimanis MP Mohamad Alamin of Barisan Nasional who is also the deputy foreign minister.
Anifah is looking to make Bongawan the new O&G hub of Sabah, saying the good relations he built during his time as foreign minister would help draw foreign investors. - FMT
