Former Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin thought her political career was over after she quit Umno in 2018 to join Bersatu.MASJID TANAH: Mas Ermieyati Samsudin thought her political career was over after she quit Umno to join Bersatu, especially since the Masjid Tanah seat was her old party’s stronghold.
In fact, the former Masjid Tanah MP even expected to be trashed in the Melaka state elections when she contested against state Barisan Nasional chief Ab Rauf Yusoh for the Tanjung Bidara seat.
As observers had expected, Mas Ermieyati lost by only 364 votes, which she said opened her eyes to the fact that many still believed in her.
In that contest, she was considered an “outsider” as she was not from the area, yet she managed to secure 3,195 votes while contesting under the Perikatan Nasional banner. Rauf received 3,559 votes.

“Tanjung Bidara is not my hometown. I am from Ayer Limau. When I was sent there, I thought I would lose badly but Umno only won by a small margin,” she told FMT in an interview.
She said she took this as a sign that the people of Melaka still felt PN and her were relevant.
In the coming election (GE15), Mas Ermieyati will go up against candidates from BN, Muda and Pejuang.
“I know it won’t be easy to retain the seat. If the people still need my services, they can give me another chance in Masjid Tanah.
“If they do not feel I am good or qualified and want a change, that’s up to them. But I am committed to Masjid Tanah.”
She said despite BN’s big win in the Melaka polls, the coalition may not necessarily be able to pull off a victory in GE15.
“We have learned from our mistakes, and we’ve improved. PN is ready for this election. If we felt that BN would win big again, we would not be contesting.”
In the last election, Mas Ermieyati, then part of BN, won the seat by more than 8,000 votes, defeating candidates from Pakatan Harapan and PAS. - FMT
