Hulu Laknat Kota Celaka Mps Seek Action Against Awang S Remarks
Hulu Langat MP Sany Hamzan has sought to refer Pendang MP Awang Hashim to the Parliament’s Rights and Privileges Committee over the PAS lawmaker's “insulting remarks” in the Dewan Rakyat.
Speaking to reporters in Parliament, Sany cited Awang’s interjection during Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s winding-up speech last Thursday, with repeated references to Hulu Langat as “Hulu Laknat”. Laknat means damned in Malay.
“The actions of the Pendang MP not only tarnish the good name of Hulu Langat and its people but are also deemed to be an insult to the sovereignty and administration of the Selangor sultan.
“Such conduct is inappropriate, uncivilised, and contrary to the principles of the Federal Constitution and the code of conduct expected of an honourable MP in the Dewan Rakyat,” he said at a press conference today.
Sany (above, centre) also submitted an official motion to the Dewan Rakyat speaker’s office this morning under Standing Order 36(10), to refer Awang for further action.
Throughout any Dewan Rakyat proceedings, elected lawmakers are required to refer to each other not by name but by their respective constituencies.
According to the Hansard, Awang had on Oct 30 repeated “Hulu Laknat” three times during a brief commotion sparked by Sany’s response to Kota Bharu MP Takiyuddin Hassan’s interjection of Saifuddin’s speech surrounding a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency training exercise involving the Rusila mosque in Marang, Terengganu.

Pendang MP Awang HashimAwang had attempted to raise a point of order against Sany, but the proceeding presided by Paya Besar MP Shahar Abdullah, sitting in for the speaker, eventually reached an “amicable solution” following Saifuddin’s explanations, after which Takiyuddin offered to consider the issue “settled”.
Making fun of Kota Melaka
Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong, who was also present at the press conference, criticised Awang for insulting his constituency by referring to it as “Kota Celaka”. In Malay, celaka also means damned.
He said Awang did so on Oct 15 during the former’s debate on Budget 2026.
“As the MP for Kota Melaka, I condemn Pendang’s action… He mentioned it a few weeks ago, and when I went back to my constituency, the residents voiced their unhappiness,” Khoo added.

Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay TiongAccording to the Hansard for Oct 15, Khoo had sparked a commotion when he started his budget debate by targeting an absent Pagoh MP Muhyiddin Yassin and attempted to highlight the case of the former premier’s fugitive son-in-law.
Khoo’s remark prompted an interjection from Hulu Terengganu MP Rosol Wahid and the Hansard went on to state that several MPs had spoken without switching on their microphones.
Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ramli Nor, who presided over the debate, issued warnings to the two lawmakers, after which Awang stood up to raise a point of order against Khoo.
“I want to say - 36(6). Usually, when there’s chaos or commotion, it’s those on the other side who start making provocations - especially this ‘Kota Celaka’… eh, Kota Melaka (laughter in the house). Sorry, my mistake.
“Especially since he often provokes by bringing up Pagoh. He keeps mentioning it, like Pagoh is stuck in his head. That’s why things get noisy,” said Awang, according to the Hansard.
Other Pakatan Harapan lawmakers present today, Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan, Sri Gading MP Aminolhuda Hassan and Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof, collectively urged Awang to refrain from uttering such crude remarks, which they said did not reflect the culture of PAS as an Islamic party.
