How Your Oral Health Affects Your Gut
🧠 Your Gut Health Might Start With Your Teeth

When was the last time you visited your dentist before something started hurting? If your answer is “can’t remember,” you’re not alone. But here's the plot twist: ignoring your teeth doesn’t just mess with your smile, it could be messing with your gut, too

This World Oral Health Day, Prof Seow Liang Lin, Dean of the School of Dentistry at IMU University, is flipping the script on how we view oral hygiene. According to her, there’s a strong (and often overlooked) link between oral and gut health and it could be impacting more than just your breath
🔗 The Mouth Gut Connection: Explained
We tend to treat the mouth and gut like they’re on totally different teams. But in reality? They’re close collaborators, especially when bacteria get involved.
“Bacteria from gum disease can survive the stomach’s harsh environment and affect the balance of good gut bacteria,” said Prof Seow.
This means:
Oral bacteria can cause gut inflammation
It may trigger digestive issues like IBD or Crohn’s disease
And yes, tooth problems can affect what you eat, which impacts digestion
Oh, and if you’re dealing with acid reflux? The backflow of stomach acid can wear down your tooth enamel too. Ouch.
🚩 Why Ignoring Oral Health Is a Red Flag
Here’s what most people miss:
Gum disease often doesn’t hurt, until it’s too late
Bleeding gums? Not normal
Losing teeth = fewer food options = risk of malnutrition
Plus, common habits like smoking or skipping dental visits can quietly fuel this chain reaction. Even your favorite instant noodles can’t save you from a messed-up microbiome.
🧼 Real Talk: What You Should Be Doing
So what now? Prof Seow keeps it simple:
Brush + floss = non-negotiable
Visit your dentist at least once a year
If you wear braces or have gum issues, go more often
Build a relationship with your dentist, you’ll thank yourself later
“Think of your dentist as your health ally, not just someone you see when things go wrong,” she said.
Quick Recap - Don’t Sleep on Your Oral Health!
Taking care of your mouth = taking care of your gut = taking care of your whole health.
Let this be your sign to book that dental appointment. Your gut might just thank you.
