How SPF record helps preventing SPAM and Phishing Mail !


Prevent SPAM and Phishing Mail

SPF Records or it calls Sender Policy Framework (SPF) is a simple email-validation system designed to detect email spoofing.

It provide a mechanism to allow receiving mail exchangers to check the incoming mail from a domain, should comes from an authorized host by that domain's administrators.

The list of authorized sending hosts for a domain is published in the Domain Name System (DNS) records for that domain in the form of a specially formatted TXT record.


This is because everybody knows that email spam and phishing often use forged "from" addresses to confusing the community, so by publishing and checking SPF records can be considered anti-spam techniques.

This is How SPF Record works

For example, suppose that your domain example.com uses Gmail. You create an SPF record that identifies the Google Apps mail servers as the authorized mail servers for your domain.

When a recipient's mail server receives a message from [email protected], it can check the SPF record for example.com to determine whether it is a valid message or not. If the message comes from a server other than the Google Apps mail servers listed in the SPF record, the recipient's mail server can reject it as spam.

If your domain does not have an SPF record, some recipient domains may reject messages from your users because they cannot validate that the messages come from an authorized mail server.

If you've already set the SPF record for your domain, it means that you have set Google's servers in the SPF records.

How to Configure the SPF records if i used Google Apps ?

1. You need to add the Google spf record in your DNS records

2. You need to create a TXT record containing this text ( including the inverted commas) :  "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all"
