Highway Operator Blocks Off Scenic Spots New Layby Planned

(Prolintas pic)PETALING JAYA: Safety cones have been placed at scenic spots on the newly-opened SUKE highway in Kuala Lumpur to prevent motorists from stopping on the emergency lane to take snapshots.
The action comes in the wake of an accident within hours of the 16km Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Expressway being opened.
A motorcycle passenger was injured when the rider collided with a car whose driver had stopped on the emergency lane to snap pictures of the scenic surroundings.
Highway operator Prolintas said the company was aware that some motorists were excited at using the highway and stopped to take snapshots of the scenic view at several locations, Bernama reported.

A new rest and service area will be built near the Tasik Tambahan Interchange in the future, so that highway users could comfortably and safely enjoy the panoramic view of Kuala Lumpur, the company said.
Prolintas group chief executive Mohammad Azlan Abdullah said safety cones had been placed at those locations to prevent users from stopping without an emergency reason.
Signs to say “no stopping unless in an emergency” would be installed, and more frequent patrols carried out by the SUKE patrol unit, he said.
He hoped highway users would take safety seriously.
Azlan said nearly 100,000 vehicles have been recorded passing through the highway in the first 24 hours of operations from noon Sept 16.
Motorists started forming a queue as early as 11.30am at every highway entrance.
The first phase of the highway was opened on Friday, with toll-free rides for one month. - FMT
