PETALING JAYA: A man, who was forced to help the suspect in the shooting at a shopping mall in Setia Alam make his escape, recounted the ordeal his family of six faced at gunpoint.
The 30-year-old, who requested anonymity, said he was with his wife and four children at a restaurant in the mall on Saturday when the shooting happened.
He was quoted by Harian Metro as saying that after the gunshots were heard, the mall’s security guards had told them to immediately leave the premises.
He said he saw many cars leaving the parking lot at the time, but just before his family got into their car, they encountered the shooter pointing his gun at them.
“I was stunned. The suspect even fired at the wall of the car park to show that he had a real gun,” he said.
He said the gunman ordered the family to get into the car and sat in the back seat himself.
“I asked him to put the gun away so as to not scare the children,” the man said.
He said the gunman ordered him to drive out of the mall before asking to be dropped by the highway.
“The man was in the car for about 45 minutes and took the memory card from the car’s dash cam before disappearing,” he said.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain said the gunman, in his 30s, was suspected to have been under the influence of drugs at the time.
Based on a preliminary investigation, he said, the gunman was believed to have shot a shopping mall janitor in anger after being told to remove his belongings in the area.
However, Shuhaily said the suspect’s real motive has yet to be determined. - FMT
