Ismail Sabri Yaakob speaking last night at his first media interview since he became prime minister.PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob says he wants all opposition parties to sign a political understanding with his government “to build the country together” and extend the political calm now prevailing.
In his first media interview since he became Malaysia’s 9th prime minister, Ismail said discussions were continuing with the remaining opposition parties about signing the pact.
Last month, Ismail signed a memorandum of understanding with leaders of Pakatan Harapan, the largest opposition bloc, to cooperate in the interest of political stability and transformation.
However, Pejuang, led by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and Sabah-based Warisan, led by Shafie Apdal, have so far refused to sign the pact.
Ismail said he was satisfied with the political calm in the Dewan Rakyat after the MoU was signed. “There are not many interruptions and shouting like before. The situation is calm. We respect one another,” he said. The situation outside Parliament also seemed calmer and this was what the government wanted.
“My goal is for all opposition parties to sign. Inclusivity is not limited to race and religion but political ideologies. Let’s build the country together,” he said.
“We can reduce politicking, fighting and the government can focus all our efforts for the country” including the fight against Covid-19, and efforts to restore the economy and ensure the success of the 12th Malaysia Plan.
“The people want to see the Covid-19 issue resolved. Secondly, the people want the economy restored so they can live better lives than they did during the pandemic.” - FMT
