Guan Eng Cites Najib S I Was Not In Lock Up Video Over Double Standard Claim
Lim Guan Eng has questioned MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki over the claim that even former premier Najib Abdul Razak had been detained overnight
To drive home the point, the former finance minister cited a video recording of Najib from 2018 in which the latter said he did not spend a night in the lock up at the MACC headquarters
Lim, on the other hand, had said in a Facebook posting over the weekend that he was forced to change into the orange MACC detainee outfit and slept on the wooden floor of the lock-up without a mattress or pillow unlike his predecessor (Najib)
He had said that only MACC could answer if this was double standard or otherwise
In a media statement today, he called on Azam to clarify the matter instead of “challenging” him to lodge a complaint if he was dissatisfied with his arrest
“Why is the chief commissioner behaving so personally against me as to challenge me to lodge a police report or take MACC to court for my comment in my Facebook post
“... In my post, I did not comment on my treatment by MACC officers whilst in their custody on Aug 6 to 7. I only asked MACC why my predecessor was not given similar treatment by being placed in the lock-up wearing the MACC orange lockup T-shirt,” he added
Following the criticism over Lim's overnight detention, Azam had defended his officers and said the decision to arrest a suspect is at the discretion of the investigating officer and is provided for under the law
He also said Lim was not the first politician to be detained overnight, naming Najib, his wife Rosmah Mansor, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Umno supreme council member Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim as examples
Meanwhile, Lim said Azam did not rebut nor correct Najib's statement in 2018 that he was not held in a lock-up
“Can Azam explain, so we can seek the truth?” he said, asking if Azam was acting impartially by attempting to distract attention by challenging him to lodge a report
Following Lim's arrest, Najib took to social media to claim that he too was detained in the lock-up
Malaysiakini had attempted to seek further clarification on this since in the video recording, the former premier had denied spending a night behind bars. However, there has been no response to date
Lim was detained on Aug 6 by MACC in connection with its probe pertaining to the RM6.3 billion Penang undersea tunnel project, when he served as the state's chief minister
He was later charged with using his position for personal gratification of up to RM3.3 million and another for soliciting a bribe in connection with the same mega infrastructure project
Malaysiakini is contacting Azam for his response. - Mkini
