Govt Should Give Washable Pads To Teen Girls For Sustainability Mp
PARLIAMENT | Fuziah Salleh (Harapan-Kuantan) suggested giving teenage girls “washable” menstrual pads which can be reused instead of disposable ones.
She questioned whether the government's move to give disposable pads to about 130,000 teenage girls monthly is a sustainable practice.
“If we want to give to these 130,000 teenagers the whole year, is this sustainable? That is if we directly give them the menstrual pads, but if we involve NGOs, that means the budget is even smaller.
“I would like to suggest, if the ministry has not thought of this, to use washable sanitary towels,” said Fuziah while debating Budget 2022 in the Dewan Rakyat today.
She said other countries did this to tackle the issue of period poverty.
Washable menstrual pads can also be reused which makes it eco-friendly as well, she said.
Fuziah stressed that period poverty is a very real issue in Malaysia that severely affects the education of teenage girls.
“If their period is 10 days, 15 days, the children do not go to school for 10 or 15 days. Imagine the number of days of learning they have lost from school.
“So period poverty is real, it is an issue that I agree is serious,” she said.
Under Budget 2022, Putrajaya said it would provide free personal hygiene kits every month to about 130,000 teenage girls from B40 (bottom 40 percent income earner) families to tackle the issue of period poverty.
Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said an estimated 130,000 teenage girls from B40 families do not have access to hygiene products, such as menstrual pads, due to financial constraints. - Mkini
