Govt Didn T Seek Post Critical Of Me To Be Removed Says Fahmi
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said anyone can lodge a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission if they find a post to be offensive.KUALA LUMPUR: Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil has denied allegations that the government wrote to social media platform X to request a post critical of him to be taken down.
“My office and I are not responsible for it,” Fahmi said at a press conference here today.
“I was not aware of the matter, or the post, until today.”
Malaysiakini reported that the allegation was made by an X user who called Fahmi a “bloody moron” and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s “lackey” in a post.
The user alleged that the social media platform later sent him a notice stating that it received a request from the government claiming the content violates Malaysian law.
It is unclear what exactly the request was for.
Fahmi, who is also the government spokesman, went on to explain that anyone can lodge a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) if they find a social media post to be offensive.
He said MCMC has the authority to act on such posts without consulting the ministry.
Open to working with education ministry
Fahmi also said he is open to working with the education ministry to raise parents’ awareness about the ease at which pornography can be accessed by children.
“Yes, we are open to collaborating with the education ministry to address the matter,” he said.
“However, it is important for me to meet Google’s officials. I have also received complaints from senators regarding the nature of Google ads,” he said, without elaborating.
Yesterday, Fahmi had said that he, along with MCMC, would meet with Google officials next week following a complaint by a teacher that a student had watched pornography on YouTube.
Fahmi’s statement has drawn criticism from his followers on X, with most placing the blame on parents.
Some were left puzzled by Fahmi’s decision to meet with the search engine giant, suggesting that the ministry should collaborate with the education ministry to raise awareness on the matter instead. - FMT
