Good Samaritans Beware Never Move Accident Victims Lest It Aggravate Injuries Wait For Ambulance
DESPITE the frequent reports of many Malaysians’ lack’ of road etiquette, one thing that they cannot be faulted for is stopping to lend a helping hand to accident victim(s).
However, this is not always a good idea as a post on X by MYNEWSHUB (@mynewshub) highlighted. A short clip shows an accident victim lying in a ditch with two motorcyclists having stepped in to try retrieve the victim.
A passerby could be heard shouting not to move him as it could worsen his injuries. But the two riders were insistent they could not just leave him lying there and proceeded to move the victim with great difficulty (it might be added).
The poster observed that although the two bikers might be well-intentioned, the lady was right in giving a scream that the duo should wait for the ambulance to arrive first.
Let the professionals do their part was the clear PSA (public service announcement) by the self-proclaimed online news portal.

One commenter concurred with the PSA by stating that the best thing was to ensure the victim was not in immediate danger and was as comfortable as possible.
Unless the victim was conscious and requested for something, do not even attempt to remove his helmet was the sound advice here.

Another commenter counselled against being “overly clever without prior knowledge of the correct medical procedure”.
He reiterated not to move the accident victim or even attempt to straighten the bodies and limbs of accident victims.
Likewise, refrain from giving water without knowing the internal condition of the victim nor urging them to sleep. Just call an ambulance and suffice to keep the victim calm.

There was a real danger of spinal injury which could be the result of moving the victim, cautioned one commenter.

The stubbornness of the two well-intentioned bikers was also criticised as their action could worsen the accident victim’s injury or even be fatal.

Few commenters contended that the incident highlighted the need for basic first aid to be taught in schools.

Some commenters could not help point out the two bikers were not only stubborn but ignorant, equating them to Mat Rempit.

One commenter though couldn’t help but bring race into equation by comparing the level of knowledge between the two Malay bikers and the Chinese lady who gave the pertinent advice of not to move the accident victim.

This reminder is certainly timely and well-intentioned considering that one wrong move in lifting the accident victim out of the ditch may only worsen his injury or be life-threatening to him.
