Glovemaker Wrp To Hold Rock Concert For Staff

Amid a corporate restructuring exercise, glove maker WRP Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd will hold a free rock concert for all employees tonight
Featuring acclaimed local band Estranged, it is slated to begin at 6pm and will take place at the company’s factory in Bandar Salak Tinggi, Sepang
In a statement issued to Malaysiakini, WRP’s lawyer Mathew Thomas Philip said the staff-appreciation concert was funded by “anonymous donors”
“The concert by Estranged at WRP this evening forms part of our efforts to reach out to all the WRP employees and workers, to let them know that they matter

“This free concert, sponsored by anonymous donors, is exclusively for WRP employees
“The board of directors of WRP wants to send a signal that they really care for the employees and that things are going to be better for them going forward,” the lawyer added
WRP first made headlines last January when its workers went on strike to protest three months of unpaid salaries. The Labour Department found that it withheld the salaries of its workers, had not paid overtime, made unfair pay cuts and had imposed wrongful working hours during breaks and public holidays US Customs and Border Protection later banned the import of disposable rubber gloves by WRP on suspicion that “slave labour” had been involved in the manufacturing process. On Jan 1 this year, WRP appointed interim liquidators and temporarily suspended its operations due to apparent financial constraints. It later received a cash injection from TAEL Partners. In a turnaround plan, an interim CEO and new directors were also announced, , along with a plan to remediate victims of reported irregular labour policies
However, several of its workers previously told Malaysiakini that they had yet to receive their full wages.  - Mkini
