(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: Giving discounts of up to 80% for police traffic summonses is a major embarrassment, an opposition MP has claimed, adding that it was akin to a supermarket giving seasonal discounts.
“People who obey the law and pay their summonses on time have already settled their summonses in full,” said Ngeh Koo Ham (PH-Beruas).
“But those who don’t abide by the law are now not required to pay in full and given discounts of up to 80%.
“This is an insult to the country’s laws,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when debating the Supply Bill 2022 at the committee stage for the home ministry.
Ngeh also suggested that police be more careful where they hold operations against motorists and questioned the need to hold operations against speeding in villages or places that were not densely populated.
Police are offering discounts of up to 80% on selected traffic summonses from today until Sunday to mark the 100-Day Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia programme. Motorists can check and pay summonses through the MyBayar Saman portal or at police stations.
Meanwhile, the MySIKAP payment system for the Road Transport Department (JPJ) experienced high volume, which led to the site crashing.
JPJ, in a statement on its Facebook page at 1.30pm today, apologised for the inconvenience.
JPJ, like the police, is offering discounts of up to 80% for outstanding summonses from Dec 9 to 12, with the exception of cases registered in court or with warrants of arrest issued against them. - FMT
