Sanusi Md Nor said the Kedah Aerotropolis project would serve as a cargo hub. (Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Md Nor has asked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to support and approve the Kedah Aerotropolis logistics hub project, saying it would not require any funds from the federal government.
Sanusi said the project, expected to cost RM7 billion, would be fully funded by the private sector and it will have two main partners, who will also serve as the state government’s strategic associates in this development.
“Funding for the project will be sorted out in due time. There won’t be a need for federal funding, so it won’t burden Putrajaya financially,” he said in a Facebook post.
Sanusi added that the Kedah Aerotropolis would serve as a cargo hub, including frozen and trans-shipment cargo.
Sanusi Md Nor.He also said the federal government’s plans to upgrade international airports in Subang and Penang were different from developing the Kedah Aerotropolis as this involves building a completely new terminal and runways, among other related buildings.
Sanusi said the Kedah Aerotropolis would also serve as a maintenance and repair facility (MRO), which he believes would indirectly complement the Penang International Airport (PIA).
“Kedah Aerotropolis, with its aerospace, MRO and cargo shipment facilities, would complement the PIA, to help it deal with its passenger influx,” he said.
During the tabling of Budget 2023 last Friday, Anwar said Putrajaya would expand the Subang and Penang airports to attract investments.
Anwar said doing this was “more economical” than the proposed development of the Aerotropolis in Kulim. - FMT
