TG PIAI POLLS | In this final 48 hours of campaigning, MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon is accusing Gerakan of splitting the Chinese votes in Tanjung Piai to undermine MCA
Speaking in a press conference at Pekan Nanas this morning, Chong (photo, above) questioned the objective of Gerakan contesting in the by-election and asked if Gerakan was trying to sabotage his party
According to Chong, Gerakan has been attacking MCA since campaigning started but has no words concerning the performance of the Pakatan Harapan government
He also claimed that the other four candidates were focusing their attacks on MCA's Wee Jeck Seng
“No matter if they are Berjasa, Harapan or Gerakan, they all attacked Wee only. Our victory is in peril
“Why against MCA only? It is clear that Gerakan is trying to dilute the Chinese votes and decrease the support going to MCA for Bersatu to win
“I think Gerakan is more like a hitman who is attacking MCA from the side and not out to win this by-election. When they have no opinions towards their other opponents, it is very suspicious,” he added
According to Chong, the public response to Wee during the first week of the campaign was very encouraging. However, when it came to the second week, the response became less hopeful due to the various attacks from Harapan and Gerakan
“If you want to teach Harapan a lesson, you should focus the votes to go to MCA. If the votes divert to Gerakan and Berjasa then it will not have the desired effect,” he said
When contacted, Gerakan chairperson Dominic Lau said he believed Chong is feeling the pressure from Gerakan
If not Gerakan had not announced its intention contest in the first place, MCA might not have obtained the chance to contest as well, Lau said
He stressed that as long as MCA was with BN, they would not have any autonomy and cannot make their own decisions as they have to look at their big brother Umno
Therefore, Lau urged Tanjung Piai voters to vote for an opposition that has autonomy
Meanwhile, Gerakan secretary-general Mak Kah Keong also commented in his facebook by asking whether MCA dare to say Berjasa was diluting the votes of Malays or not
