Gerakan Azam S Explanation Can T Even Convince A Three Year Old
Perikatan Nasional (PN) component parties have joined the chorus for decisive action to be taken against MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki over his ownership of millions of shares in two public listed companies in 2015 and 2016.
Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong (above) described the MACC's justification as "far-fetched" which "can't even deceive a three-year-old child".
Azam's ownership of the shares had raised questions on if it commensurated with his income as a public servant.
MACC's Anti-Corruption Advisory Board chairperson Abu Zahar Ujang's attempt to explain away the controversy by claiming that they were purchased in Azam's name by his younger brother ended up opening another can of worms, including the possibility of running afoul of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991.
"Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob should take the most severe action against Azam Baki, including considering replacing the chief commissioner of the MACC," Oh said in a statement today
The Gerakan leader pointed out that Azam, as the MACC chairperson, should be highly sensitive to monetary transactions compared to ordinary citizens.
"Therefore, Azam's explanation is very unacceptable," he added, highlighting the possible conflict of interest between law enforcement and business.
Oh also urged the relevant authorities to investigate Azam.
MACC chief commissioner Azam BakiPAS wants Azam to go on garden leave
PAS Youth called on Azam to be put on garden leave.
Its chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the controversy can affect the government's credibility and commitment to combating corruption.
"PAS Youth views the issue seriously and it is the duty of the government, particularly the prime minister's leadership, to take immediate action and hold an independent and transparent investigation.
"We also respectfully urged all those involved, including senior MACC officers, to go on leave until the investigation is completed and their names are cleared.
"PAS Youth believes the government should take this seriously to avoid negative perception towards the government and country as well as to ensure that integrity is preserved," he said in a statement. - Mkini
