In the latest development in a heated debate over the Selangor floods, political secretary to the state’s menteri besar Saifuddin Shafi Muhammad told Selangor PAS Youth that the floods in Ijok were caused by the party’s deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
The flood barrier project, which Tuan Ibrahim approved in 2020 as then-environment and water minister, caused flooding in the Kuala Selangor district, Saifuddin claimed.
“The project, which should have been completed in December 2024 is only now 70 percent finished, so Selangor PAS Youth should ask what the criteria are for selecting contractors that have until now failed to complete an important project in the set time,” he said in a statement.
Yesterday, Selangor PAS Youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said billions had been allocated for flood mitigation projects in Selangor but the state continues to grapple with flooding.
In response, Saifuddin said Sukri’s statement made the latter look “unintelligent”.
Earlier today, Selangor PAS Youth election director Kamarul Jamaluddin called for Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari to be replaced, saying this would solve flooding issues in the state.
Saifuddin (above) in his statement replied that natural disasters could affect anyone.
Change MBs of PAS states too
Therefore it is reasonable and consistent to first change the menteris besar in PAS-led Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, he added.
“Yesterday, Perlis was hit by flash floods, so it’s for the best that the Perlis menteri besar be changed too,” he retorted.
Saifuddin also said that Selangor has been among the first to extend aid to the states governed by PAS.
Selangor PAS Youth election director Kamarul JamaluddinHe went on to counter Kamarul’s claims that Selangor has not done enough for flood mitigation, saying the Irrigation and Drainage Department has put two contingency plans in place.
The first is making structural adaptations, such as reservoirs and flood tunnels, and the second involves low dams, he said.
The state also relies on the National Flood Forecast and Warning Programme, Saifuddin added. - Mkini
