Utusan Malaysia reported Chukai fire and rescue station chief Hanif Che Khalid as saying that the flames were spreading by the time firefighters arrived at the location, after receiving an emergency call at 10pm.
“The firefighters took around 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control. All the victims are safe, and the operation finished at around 12.14am.
“The cause of the incident and the losses suffered by the victims are still under investigation,” he said.
One of the victims, Norhayati Abd Rahman, 41, said she rushed to save her physically disabled husband Rosmadi Abd Razak, 42, and their child Nur Aisy Aira, seven, when she realised that thick smoke was filling the house.
“We had just gone to our bedrooms when I smelled a burning odour and heard the crackle of flames. I found the kitchen filled with smoke.
“My husband has a neurological disease and cannot walk normally. I supported him and led him out of the house,” she said.
Kijal assemblyman Razali Idris said on Facebook that aid for the victims is being managed by the social welfare department and Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council. - FMT
