PETALING JAYA: A family in Jenjarom, Selangor, today received aid ahead of the Chinese New Year festivities from Yayasan Keluarga Malaysia (YKM) during a visit by the foundation’s chairman and former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
YKM said Na Ai Tin, 43, a sales assistant at a shop owned by her sibling, had lost her husband, Tan Heeng Kooi, in 2021 to the Covid-19 pandemic, which had exacerbated his cancer.
“The single mother who now rents a home not far from her place of work has been working hard to take care of her two schooling children, Tan Fu Xiang, 17, and Tan Yan Shi, 14.
“Since last year, YKM has visited families who are recipients of its aid every festive season. This time, YKM has identified Na’s family (for aid) this Chinese New Year,” it said in a statement.
Ismail said Na’s family is one of 16 Chinese families nationwide who will also receive RM300 in aid this Chinese New Year.
YKM also said it will start crediting Bantuan Kasih to all eligible recipients on the 30th of every month from January.
“This Bantuan Kasih will be channelled to almost 1,000 recipients, with a financial implication of RM3 million a year.
“This sum is expected to increase as we continue to receive new applications for aid, which are currently being screened,” it said.
Bantuan Kasih comprises two categories of aid, with the first being for those aged up to 15 years who will receive RM200 a month, and the second being those aged 16 up to the completion of their first bachelor’s degree, who will receive RM250 a month.
“Previously, those under 16 years received RM2,000 a year, while those aged 16 up to the completion of their first bachelor’s degree received RM2,500 a year, with payments made three times a year,” it said.
Applicants will be informed of their eligibility in the near future through email and WhatsApp. - FMT
