Fahmi To Meet Telegram Over Rampant Scams
Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil plans to meet officials from the Telegram messaging app to discuss measures to counter the many scams taking place on the popular app.
According to a report by Bernama, Fahmi (above) told reporters that he intends to initiate a meeting soon.
“We hope to contact Telegram to discuss a few things on the matter.
"Please be careful during this festive season (because) there will definitely be those who will take advantage of the situation," he said.
Fahmi also advised victims to call the National Scam Response Centre at 997 to make a report so that immediate action can be taken and to prevent them from losing money.
“This way we can block any money from going through,” he added.
Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had successfully blocked 1.8 billion scam calls between 2017 and 2022, and that as many as 300 million SMS scam messages had also been blocked since 2018.
The Lembah Pantai MP advised young people to verify offers made on social media for jobs before applying.
“Don’t fall for scams. If an offer is too good to be true, it probably is.
"There are various types of scams at the moment and they are not easy to deal with because when a modus operandi is established, new types of scams will emerge.
"During this festive season, scams such as 'cleaner scams' (will emerge) on Facebook for example, so we have to be careful," said Fahmi.
