(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: A former deputy minister has urged the Terengganu state government to explain the reason behind the poor level of cleanliness at Pulau Perhentian Kecil, which has purportedly caused groups of tourists to fall ill.
Former deputy housing and local government minister Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah claimed that the PAS administration’s failure to act promptly has adversely affected Terengganu’s tourism sector.
His statement comes after FMT reported that a group of Malaysians had fallen sick after a three-night holiday at Pulau Perhentian Kecil, with some even landing in hospital.
“This is the second incident where tourists have fallen ill, believed to be due to untreated sewage water being dumped into the sea.
“The tourism and local government executive councillors, as well as the Terengganu menteri besar must provide an explanation,” he said in a statement.
The Terengganu Amanah chief also called for environment and water minister, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who is also PAS’ deputy president, to provide an explanation over this recurring issue.
In June, FMT reported that six women suffered food poisoning despite heeding the advice of resort officials to eat only at the resort because of “rising cases of food poisoning”.
Another group of visitors were reported to have fallen sick earlier this month after going for a swim in the sea near the island. Some in the group suffered diarrhoea and high fever soon after their return while several others were hospitalised.
Raja Kamarul added that, after the incident in June, a Terengganu executive councillor admitted that many resorts and hotels at Pulau Perhentian did not have a sewage system.
“But there was no follow-up to the first incident and now another incident has happened involving more people,” he said.
For the safety of the public, he said the PAS government needed to prioritise cleanliness and the collection of garbage at tourist sites. - FMT
