(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: A passion for knowledge has inspired former Pahang menteri besar Adnan Yaakob to complete his Bachelor of Law degree at the age of 72.
Adnan, the 14th menteri besar of Pahang, was among the 414 graduates who received their scrolls at the 38th International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) convocation.
He was also on the Rector’s List for obtaining a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.62.
Sharing his academic journey, Adnan said that although he already had a Bachelor’s Degree in Literature from Universiti Malaya in 1984, he was determined to pursue a law degree.
“Many people asked me why I continued to study. I told them I had always loved seeking knowledge since my childhood. That is why even though I had a bachelor’s degree in literature, I was still interested in furthering my studies.
“In fact, I studied law here in 1984 but I didn’t complete the course as I was called to contest the general election in 1986,” he told reporters after his graduation ceremony.
Adnan, who served as menteri besar from 1999 to 2018, successfully completed his studies after three semesters of online learning and special classes with his lecturers.
“I managed to get to know other classmates online. Most are younger than me and call me ‘Pak Long’, ‘Atok’ and so on,” he joked, adding that he hoped to do his chambering in Kuantan.
Adnan joined politics in 1969 and held various positions including Bentong Umno Youth chief and division chief before being appointed menteri besar in 1999. - FMT
