It was announced yesterday that Malaysia will rollout Euro 5 petrol in September 2025 as part of a long-term initiative to improve national air quality.
KUALA LUMPUR: The rollout of Euro 5 petrol in September 2025 will not affect fuel prices in Malaysia, says natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
He clarified that the petrol prices will remain based on the two-tier pricing mechanisms for the targeted RON95 subsidy set to be introduced next year.
“We have been upgrading our fuel specifications every few years. Just like how diesel has already been upgraded to Euro 5.
“This (Euro 5 petrol) rollout is an investment that has to be made at the level of fuel companies, not consumers,” he told reporters after an event today.
The minister was asked to comment on concerns among Malaysians that the new petrol rollout will impact fuel costs.
Yesterday, Nik Nazmi announced that Malaysia will be rolling out Euro 5 petrol in September 2025, with an expected full implementation by 2027 as part of a long-term initiative to improve national air quality.
Euro 5 petrol is characterised by lower sulphur content and cleaner exhaust emissions compared with current fuels, and it is expected to help reduce air pollution.
“The adoption of Euro 5 petrol is a sustainable solution that will positively impact Malaysia’s air quality,” he was reported as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
“The natural resources and environmental sustainability ministry, and the department of environment will work closely with industry players to ensure a seamless transition,” he said.
Last week, economy minister Rafizi Ramli said the government will implement a two-tier pricing system for RON95, where eligible consumers will pay a subsidised price at retail stations, while others will pay the market price.
He added that the details of this system are being finalised by his ministry and the finance ministry before being presented to the Cabinet and announced to the public. - FMT
