Ec To Decide On Malacca Election Date Next Monday
The Election Commission is set to meet and decide on dates for the Malacca state election next Monday.
An election must be held by Dec 3 at the latest - 60 days from when the state legislative assembly was dissolved on Oct 4.
A press invite for the meeting - to be held in Malacca - stated that a press conference would be held after a decision had been made.
The election can be put on hold if a localised emergency is declared.
Putrajaya had said that they would decide on whether to seek a localised emergency this week.
Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Nazrin Shah - who is the acting king - had also been briefed on the situation in Malacca by Attorney-General Idrus Harun.
The Malacca state legislative assembly had been dissolved following an unsuccessful coup attempt led by former chief minister Idris Haron and three others.
The other three were Nor Azman Hassan (Umno-Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Bersatu-Telok Mas) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent-Pengkalan Batu).
The Malacca state assembly has 28 seats. The BN-led Malacca government was represented by 17 assemblypersons, comprising 14 from Umno, two from Bersatu and one BN-friendly Independent, while the opposition has 11 seats - seven from the DAP, and two each from PKR and Amanah.
Previously, the palace had declared an emergency in Sarawak up until February 2022 - which was also meant to postpone elections during the pandemic.
A snap election in Sabah in 2020 had disastrous effects and caused a massive resurgence of Covid-19 in the country.
As of last night, 89.6 percent of adults in Malacca had been vaccinated.
The Health Ministry had said that it had standard operating procedures prepared for the Malacca state election - but has not laid out what the measures were. - Mkini
