E Hailing Driver Assault Minister Says Won T Interfere
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said he would not interfere in the case of a police escort to a member of a royal household allegedly assaulting an e-hailing driver.
“I will not interfere, it is up to the inspector-general of police,” Bernama quoted him as saying in Penang, today.
In a separate development, Oriental Daily quoted Human Resources Minister Steven Sim saying Grab Malaysia has applied for Socso payments on behalf of its driver who was allegedly assaulted.
“The application was submitted this morning. Usually, this won’t take too long and Socso is expected to process it in a few days,” the minister was quoted as saying.
He reportedly said this on the sidelines of the launch of Grab’s sponsorship of the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS).
The initiative under Budget 2024 is a matching grant that is 90 percent borne by the government and 10 percent by Grab Malaysia, for over 180,000 Grab drivers and delivery partners.
Human Resources Minister Steven SimIt provides the workers with coverage for 12 months starting from the date they register with Grab.
Alleged assault, coverup
Previously, driver Ong Ing Keong was alleged to have been assaulted by a police escort of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim who instructed him to move his vehicle.
The incident supposedly took place at the St Regis Hotel Kuala Lumpur on May 28 while Ong, who is hearing-impaired, was waiting for a passenger.
He also revealed attempts to cover up the matter after he lodged a police report about the assault, and that a palace representative was present when these attempts were made.
Tunku Ismail has called for a thorough investigation, saying he does not condone any illegal action or intimidation.
Lawyer N Surendran, who is assisting Ong with the case, said the police are probing allegations that the driver signed three other reports that were prepared by the police over his alleged assault.
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain has pledged stern action against any officer found guilty in the investigation. - Mkini
