Dr M Unreasonable To Call For Confidence Vote Now May Damage Country S Image
Dr Mahathir Mohamad said it is unreasonable for people to be calling for a confidence vote for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to be conducted in Parliament as soon as possible.
The former prime minister said if the unexpected happens and Ismail Sabri fails to secure majority support in the Dewan Rakyat, it will negatively affect the country’s image on an international level.
“I don’t think (we need to have a confidence vote for the prime minister), we do not want to have another change of the prime minister again.
“So, if this (confidence vote was brought) to Parliament and he (Ismail Sabri) does not get the majority, we will have to change to another (prime minister)… so the world is laughing (at us), we do not want to let (this government) fall,” said Mahathir, as reported by Astro Awani.
Meanwhile, the Pejuang chairperson also said he would wait to see who were chosen to join the National Recovery Council (NRC) as well as the Covid-19 special task force before he decides if he’ll join them or not.
Yesterday, Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah had urged for a confidence vote on Ismail Sabri to be held in Parliament as soon as possible, in order to ascertain his legitimacy so that he can govern without interference.
On Aug 18, two days after Muhyiddin Yassin resigned as prime minister, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had decreed - via a statement from the Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin - that the new prime minister must seek a vote of confidence as soon as possible. - Mkini
