Rafidah Aziz, a former minister, says Malaysians are living in troubling times, confronted with distressing news and events.PETALING JAYA: A society devoid of equitable policies, which applies different standards to the people in all aspects of governance, will only lead to public dissatisfaction and disharmony, says former federal minister Rafidah Aziz.
Rafidah said public governance must be unbiased and built on fairness and equitability, whether it involves social and economic policies or application of the law.
“Unless it is untainted and practices objective administration of justice for the good of society and the nation at large, there will be that dissatisfaction. This in turn will not create the calm and harmonious environment that would enable the necessary socio-economic development.
“These are continuing to be troubling times, as we are confronted so often with news and happenings that are distressing and upsetting,” she said in a social media post today, apparently about the current public debate on former prime minister Najib Razak’s 12-year jail sentence being commuted.
The pardons board decision has been met with criticism from various people, including government backbencher Ramkarpal Singh and civil society organisations, while unity government leaders have urged all parties to respect the board’s decision.
Muda also claimed the reduced sentence was akin to double standards between the political elite and regular Malaysians.
Rafidah said many are in disbelief concerning all that is happening in the country now, but urged Malaysians to stay true to their national identity individually and collectively. “Reject anything that is the very antithesis of what Malaysia is all about, and what its citizens must be all about,” she added. - FMT
